Journalism or Entertainment?  03/03/2008

Recently, we are witnessing an unprecedented effect of how a master communicator and gifted public speaker is changing the traditional demographics of the ages participating in the polls, because of a candidate hardly heard from before.  And now, because of the favorable media coverage Sen. Obama is becoming the “The Barak Obama phenomenon”.

Until recent weeks, Hillary Clinton was seen as the inevitable candidate to win the presidential nomination of her party until the whole scope started to change after the Iowa primaries (only with 70 delegates).

How was this change taken? Do to the press getting bias against Sen. Clinton giving Sen. Barak Obama a “free pass”?

I have been working in local national and “Network Media” for more than 20 years, half of my career in News.

The tremendous reach and frequency of the 24 hour news is the focus of this editorial.

Are we getting lost in the focus of the entertainment aspect of the news to avoid the loss in the ratings?

Let’s look at what I call the “transition” of a journalist to an entertainer, how do we notice?

When a journalist leaves the streets to settle in the studio becoming stars of their own shows, the main role, the head liner; that is when the attitude, including the figures in their paycheck change which can amount to quite some extra zeros (to the yearly income).

Now, they have to be worried about their editorial notes and the ratings, because they are not part of the crew anymore. They do not have to respond to the producers and managers the same way as before.

Maybe Hillary Clinton is not the driving force to boost the ratings or the media journalists and show hosts are becoming “Expert choosers” of which candidate is better for us? I believe strongly to leave that to the super delegates that is their job.

The other story, Chris Mathews from MSNBC seem to support that there is some kind of testy relationship between Sen. Hillarie’s campaign staff and the press who knows, something seemed to have happen there to justify the bias of the media.

In the latest MSNBC Democratic Debate Sen. Hillary Clinton complained that she was always getting the first questions, while her opponent has a chance to think about the best possible answers. MSNBC’s David Shuster did research that complaint and found that this was the case in the last six debates. At the same time, Sen. Hillary Clinton also mentioned the Saturday Night Live comedy sketch about the CNN debate to defend herself of the “Media Bias”.

Of course, even though it was a true complaint, the media made it out like Sen. Hillary was a whining about that, no matter what, the bias of the Media is hard for her to overcome.

Are comedians acting more seriously than the press? One thing is becoming an important reality, now it is a must for the candidates to go to Letterman and Leno to boost their chances.
